Privacy Policy — Quit Sugar Coach
TriCode Studio ("we", "us") built Quit Sugar Coach to help you cut added sugar. This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.
The short version
- No sign-up. We never ask for your name, email or phone number. The app creates a random, anonymous ID the first time it opens.
- Your progress stays on your device. Your quiz answers, streaks, check-ins, notes, slips, lesson progress and scan history are stored in a local database on your phone.
- A few things go to Google Firebase, the cloud service we use:
- the photos you choose or take to scan (to estimate added sugar);
- when you made your recent AI scans (to apply the limit of 10 scans every 24 hours);
- app usage statistics, if you allow them (in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland we ask first);
- reports when the app crashes or hits an error, so we can fix it;
- checks that confirm the app is genuine.
- No ads. The app shows no ads and doesn't use your advertising ID.
- We don't sell your data or use it for advertising.
Information stored on your device
The app saves the following on your phone so it can track your progress. None of it is sent to us:
| What | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Onboarding answers | Your goals, main sugar sources, usual craving times, servings per day, daily spend on sweets, previous quit attempts, your personal "why" | To build your plan and calculate sugar avoided and money saved |
| Preferences | Currency symbol, grams per serving, whether usage statistics are on | To show your stats the way you want |
| Streaks and milestones | When a streak started or ended, milestones reached | To show your sugar-free timer and celebrate milestones |
| Daily check-ins | Sugar-free or slipped, craving level (1–5), mood (1–5), optional note | To show your history and trends |
| Slips | What you had, what triggered it, optional note | To show your top triggers on the Progress screen |
| Cravings SOS sessions | When you used SOS and whether you beat the craving | To count cravings beaten |
| Lesson progress | Which of the 30 lessons and tasks you've completed | To track your program |
| Food scan history | Items identified, estimated added sugar, suggested swaps, date, and a reference to the photo, if you picked it from your gallery | To show your scan history |
| Usage statistics choice | Whether you allowed or refused usage statistics | To respect your choice |
| Reminder settings | Which reminders are on, your craving-nudge time, and the date of a trial-ending reminder | To schedule reminders on your device |
| Subscription status | Whether your Pro subscription is currently active, and when access from an access code ends, if you used one | So the app works offline without asking Google Play every time |
Some of this, such as your mood, cravings and eating habits, can be personal. It stays on your device, except in your own device backups (described below), so we can't see it.
Information processed by Google Firebase
We use Firebase and Google Cloud, services from Google, to run the AI scanner and a few supporting features. Google processes this information for us as a service provider, under the Firebase data processing terms. Learn more in Privacy and Security in Firebase.
| Service | What's processed | Why | How long it's kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firebase Authentication | A random anonymous user ID created on first launch, and when it was created and last used | To keep your scan count, and any cloud data we add in future, separate from other users | Until you reset your data in the app |
| Cloud Firestore | Under your anonymous ID: the times of your AI scans in the last 24 hours, a count of scans for each day (UTC), and, if you enter an access code we gave you, when it was redeemed and when its access ends | To apply the limit of 10 AI scans every 24 hours, even if you reinstall, to see how much the scanner is used, and to unlock Pro for people we give an access code | Until you reset your data in the app |
| Cloud Functions for Firebase | The photo you choose to scan, your anonymous ID and your language setting, while the scan is processed; an access code you type in, while it's checked | To check your scan limit and send the photo to Google's Gemini model, and to check access codes | Not stored; see "AI food scanner" below |
| Vertex AI (Google Gemini) | The photo you choose to scan, with instructions for the AI | To estimate added sugar and suggest swaps | See "AI food scanner" below |
| Firebase App Check (Google Play Integrity) | Signals from Google Play confirming the app is genuine, unmodified and installed from Google Play | To stop others from misusing the AI scanner | Processed by Google; we don't receive details about your device |
| Firebase Crashlytics | When the app crashes or hits certain errors: what went wrong and where in the app's code, the time, app version, device model, Android version, free memory and storage, screen orientation, whether the device is rooted, a Crashlytics installation ID, the screen you were on and whether Pro is active. If usage statistics are on, also the analytics events from just before the problem | To find and fix crashes and errors | 90 days |
| Google Analytics for Firebase (optional) | Explained in the next section | To understand how the app is used and improve it | Event data is kept for up to 14 months |
Firebase also uses a technical identifier for this installation (a Firebase installation ID) to deliver these services.
The Firestore database and Cloud Functions run in the United States. Google may process data in other countries where it or its sub-processors operate.
Usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase)
Your choice:
- EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland: the app asks the first time you open it and collects nothing until you choose Allow. If the app can't tell which country you're in, it asks too.
- Everywhere else: usage statistics are on by default, and you can turn them off at any time.
The country is worked out on your device from your mobile network, SIM card or language settings. The app doesn't use your location.
If usage statistics are on, the app sends Google Analytics:
- App and device details: an app instance ID, device model, Android version, app version, language, and approximate country and region (worked out from your IP address).
- Screens you open: for example Home, Program or Settings.
- Events with no personal details:
- setup: how far you got through the setup quiz (by step number), your choice on the reminders screen and whether notifications are allowed, and finishing setup;
- the subscription screen: whether plans couldn't be loaded, the plan and offer you chose, whether the purchase went through, is pending, was cancelled or failed (with Google Play's error code), whether you saw or closed the special offer, the result of restoring purchases, and whether an access code worked (never the code itself);
- using the app: completing a check-in, logging a slip, beating a craving, completing a lesson (by day number), reaching a milestone (by number of days) and sharing it, and opening a reminder;
- food scans: the outcome (such as "analyzed" or "no food found"), whether the photo came from the camera, the gallery or a sample meal, and why a scan failed (such as a lost connection).
- Whether Pro is active, so we can compare how subscribers and other people use the app.
- Events collected automatically: for example first open, app updates, sessions and in-app purchases (product and price).
Analytics events never include your notes, your "why", your photos, your mood or craving level, what you ate, what triggered a slip, or whether a check-in was sugar-free.
The app doesn't collect the advertising ID, and ad personalization signals are turned off.
To change your choice, go to Settings › Subscription & Legal › Share usage statistics. The change takes effect straight away.
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
When the app crashes, or hits an error that points to a fault in the app (for example a food scan result it can't read), it sends a report to Firebase Crashlytics, as listed in the table above. Crash reports are sent in every country, whether or not usage statistics are on, because without them we can't tell when the app breaks for you; we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the app working. A report never includes your notes, your "why", your photos, your mood or craving level, what you ate, or anything else you typed. Reports are deleted automatically after 90 days.
AI food scanner (Google Gemini)
When you pick or take a photo to scan:
- The app resizes the photo (to a maximum of 1024 pixels) and compresses it on your device.
- The app sends the photo over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our Cloud Function, with your anonymous ID and an App Check token showing the request comes from the genuine app.
- The function checks your scan limit and records the time of the scan. It then sends the photo, with instructions to estimate added sugar and suggest swaps, to Google's Gemini model on Vertex AI.
- The estimate comes back to the app, which saves it on your device. If the analysis fails, the scan doesn't count toward your limit.
The request does not include your profile, check-ins or any other app data. Our function doesn't store the photo, and TriCode Studio doesn't keep a copy.
Google processes the photo for us as a service provider under the Google Cloud terms. Google doesn't use it to train its AI models, and may hold it only briefly as needed to provide the service. For details, see Generative AI on Vertex AI: data governance and the Google Privacy Policy.
Please only scan photos of food and drink. Avoid photos showing people's faces, documents, or anything else you would not want processed by a third party.
The app picks photos through the Android Photo Picker. It only gets access to the photo you choose, and it doesn't need permission to read your whole gallery.
When you tap Camera, the app opens your phone's camera app. The camera app saves the photo to a temporary file in Quit Sugar Coach's private storage, and the app deletes it once the scan has finished. The photo isn't added to your gallery, and the app doesn't need the camera permission because it never uses the camera directly.
The built-in sample meals work without sending anything. If the AI service can't be reached, the app shows an error and doesn't upload the photo again.
Permissions
| Permission | Why it's used |
|---|---|
| Internet | To send a photo you choose or take for scanning, to talk to Firebase and Google Play, and to send usage statistics if they're on |
| View network connections | Used by Firebase and Google Play's billing library to check connectivity |
| Google Play billing | To show subscription prices and process purchases through Google Play |
| Google Play Install Referrer | Lets Google Analytics know how the app was found on Google Play (for example, from the store listing) |
| Read Google service configuration | Used by Firebase to work with Google Play services |
| Prevent phone from sleeping | Used briefly by Firebase to send queued data reliably |
| Notifications | To show the reminders you turn on. You can refuse or revoke this at any time |
| Run at startup | To restore your scheduled reminders after your phone restarts |
| Vibrate | For haptic feedback during the "Hold to Commit" pledge and the guided breathing exercise |
The app does not request access to your camera, camera roll, contacts, location, microphone, files or advertising ID.
Sharing
When you share a milestone, the app opens Android's share sheet with a short text message, for example how many days you've been sugar-free and how much sugar you've avoided. The text goes only to the app you choose. We don't see what you share.
Reminders
You can turn on a morning lesson reminder, an evening check-in reminder and a craving-time nudge, either during setup or in Settings › Daily Coach Reminders. The nudge time is worked out on your device from the craving times you chose in the setup quiz.
Reminders are scheduled with Android's alarm service and shown entirely on your device. Before showing the evening reminder, the app checks its local database to see whether you've already checked in that day. We don't use a push notification service, and no reminder content leaves your device.
If you start a free trial, the app also schedules one reminder on your device for the day before the trial ends.
You can turn reminders off in Settings, or block notifications for the app in your phone's settings.
Purchases and subscriptions
Subscriptions are sold through Google Play, which handles the payment. We never receive your card details or billing address.
To unlock Pro, the app asks Google Play on your device which subscriptions are active for your Google account. Google Play returns details such as the product, purchase token, order ID and status. The app uses them on your device to confirm and acknowledge the purchase, and saves only a simple "Pro is active" flag.
As the seller, we can see order records, such as order ID, date, country and price, in Google Play Console. If usage statistics are on, Google Analytics also records that a purchase happened, with its product and price.
Google's handling of payment information is covered by the Google Payments Privacy Notice.
Device backups
Android may include the app's data in your device backup to your Google account, depending on your device's backup settings. That backup is stored and protected by Google, not by us. You can turn it off in your device settings under Settings › System › Backup (the exact path varies by device).
Keeping and deleting your data
You're in control of what the app stores:
- Delete everything: go to Settings › Reset All Data & Delete Account. This:
- permanently erases your profile, streaks, check-ins, slips, cravings, lesson progress, scan history and milestones from the app's database;
- turns off your coaching reminders;
- deletes everything stored under your anonymous ID in Firestore, and the anonymous Firebase account itself. If you're offline, this finishes the next time you open the app while online;
- resets your analytics ID, so future usage statistics can't be linked to past ones, and clears your usage-statistics choice so you're asked again where required;
- deletes any crash report that hasn't been sent yet.
A reset doesn't cancel a subscription; do that in Google Play.
- Uninstall: removing the app deletes all of its data from your device. Records already in Firebase stay until they're deleted as described above. To have them removed after uninstalling, email us.
- Backups: copies in your Google account backup are managed through your Google account settings.
Analytics data already collected is deleted automatically when its retention period ends, and crash reports after 90 days. Contact us if you'd like help with it sooner. If Google has kept a scanned photo, its retention is governed by Google's terms linked above.
Security
Your app data is stored in the app's private storage, which other apps can't read. All data sent to Firebase travels over HTTPS. Firestore security rules only let each anonymous ID read its own records, and only our Cloud Functions can change them. App Check blocks requests that don't come from the genuine app. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we also recommend keeping your device protected with a screen lock.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR in the EU/UK or the CCPA in California), you may have rights to:
- access, correct, delete or move your personal data;
- object to or restrict how it's processed;
- withdraw consent at any time.
Most of your data lives only on your device, where you can view, change or delete it in the app. For data in Firebase, use Reset All Data & Delete Account, turn off usage statistics, or email us at support@tricodestudio.com and we'll help. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Quit Sugar Coach is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has used the app and you'd like their data removed, contact us.
Health information disclaimer
Quit Sugar Coach provides general wellness education. It is not a medical device and does not give medical advice. Sugar estimates from the food scanner are approximate. If you have diabetes or another medical condition, talk to your doctor before changing your diet.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles data, for example by adding a new service or storing more data in the cloud, we'll update this policy first and change the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
