Privacy Policy — Murmur for Mac and Windows

App: Murmur, the desktop app for macOS and Windows (bundle com.tricodestudio.murmur)
Last updated: 6 October 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Murmur for Mac and Windows (the “App”) handles information. Murmur is developed and published by TriCode Studio (“we”, “us”, or “our”). It covers the desktop App only; the Android app has its own policy.

Murmur is built so that your meetings stay on your computer. Recording, transcription, speaker separation, notes and AI summaries all run on your computer’s own processor. We operate no server that receives your recordings, transcripts, notes or summaries, and we could not read them if we wanted to.

1. The Short Version

  • Your recordings, transcripts, notes, summaries and named voices are stored only on your computer.
  • Transcription and AI summaries run on your computer. Audio and text are never uploaded, to us or anyone.
  • No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking.
  • The App connects to the internet only to download its models, to activate a licence key once, and (outside the Microsoft Store) to check for a newer version. Section 4 lists each request and exactly what it sends.
  • Audio is recorded only when you start a recording, and the App shows that it is recording for as long as it does.

2. What Stays on Your Computer

The App keeps the following in its own folder on your computer (~/Library/Application Support/Murmur on a Mac, %LOCALAPPDATA%\Murmur on Windows):

  • Meetings: the audio you record or import, the transcript, its notes (key points and action items), any AI summary, any corrections you make, and the names you give the people in it.
  • Named voices: when you name a person, the App keeps a voice signature (a list of numbers describing how that voice sounds, not a recording) so it can recognise them in later meetings. You can forget a voice in Settings at any time, and turning off “Recognise voices I’ve named” stops the App from keeping new ones.
  • Settings and your licence: your preferences, the start date of your free trial, and your licence key.
  • Models: the speech, speaker and (if you use them) AI summary models the App downloaded.

None of this is sent to us. It is never synchronised to a cloud by the App itself; your own backup or sync software (for example Time Machine or OneDrive) may copy it if you have set that up.

3. Recording

The App records your microphone (your side of a meeting) and the sound your computer plays (the other side) only after you start a recording, or accept the App’s offer to record when a call app begins using the microphone. It never starts or stops a recording by itself.

  • On macOS it asks the system for Microphone and System Audio Recording permission the first time; on Windows the system’s microphone switch applies.
  • To offer to record a call, the App looks at which apps are using the microphone (on macOS through Core Audio, on Windows through the system’s own record of microphone use). It reads app names only, never their audio, and the offer can be turned off in Settings.
  • On macOS, if you turn on “Name meetings from your calendar”, the App reads the titles and times of calendar events around the start of a recording, after asking for permission. It reads nothing else, never changes your calendar, and the setting is off by default.

4. Network Requests

The App makes only the requests below. None of them contains audio, transcripts, notes, summaries, names or meeting titles. Like any internet request, each one reveals your IP address to the server it reaches.

  • Model downloads. The speech and speaker models are downloaded once, when you first set the App up or choose a different model, from Hugging Face and GitHub. AI summary models are downloaded from Hugging Face the first time you ask for a summary with them. These are plain file downloads; nothing about you is sent.
  • Licence activation. When you enter a licence key bought from our store, the App sends that key and your computer’s name to Lemon Squeezy’s licence service once, to confirm the key and register this computer. When you remove the licence from a computer, the App tells the same service so the place on your key is freed. After activation the App works offline. Lemon Squeezy’s privacy policy applies to that request.
  • Update check. If you installed the App from our website, it reads a small file at download.tricodestudio.com at most once a day to see whether a newer version exists. The request names the App’s version and whether it is the Mac or Windows version, and nothing else. You can turn it off in Settings › About. Copies installed from the Microsoft Store do not make this request; the Store updates them.

The AI summary runs a language model inside a helper on your own computer, reached at 127.0.0.1, which is not a network connection. It is protected by a random key so no other program can use it.

5. Purchases

Buying a licence opens our store’s checkout in your web browser. Payments are handled by Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record, which collects your payment and contact details and emails you your licence key. We receive your name, email address and order details from Lemon Squeezy so we can support your purchase. We never see your card details. Lemon Squeezy’s privacy policy applies to the checkout. A licence key you activate carries the buyer’s name, which the App shows in its licence screen.

If you install the App from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft handles that installation and its updates under its own terms and privacy statement.

6. AI Assistants (Off Unless You Turn It On)

The setting “Let AI assistants read my meetings” can let an AI assistant on your computer (for example Claude Desktop) search and read your meetings through the Model Context Protocol. It is off by default. When you turn it on, the assistant you connect can read your meeting text and may send what it reads to its own provider under that provider’s terms. That is the one way meeting text can leave your computer, and it happens only if you set it up.

7. Sharing You Choose

Copying a transcript, exporting a meeting (PDF, Word, Markdown, text, HTML or subtitles) or sending a file to someone happens only when you do it, and goes wherever you send it.

8. Recording Responsibly

Many places require the consent of everyone in a conversation before it is recorded. You are responsible for telling the people in your meetings that you are recording and for complying with the laws that apply to you.

9. Retention and Deletion

Everything the App keeps stays until you delete it. Deleting a meeting in the App removes its recording, transcript, notes and summary from your computer (an imported audio file stays where you keep it). Removing the App and its folder (Section 2) removes everything. Because we hold none of your meeting data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side; for purchase records held by us or Lemon Squeezy, contact us.

10. Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

11. Changes to This Policy

We will update this page if the App’s handling of information changes, and change the date above. Significant changes will also be described in the App’s release notes.
